On the 11th May it is Mothers’ day, a day dedicated to celebrating all the wonderful women we love who have helped to shape who we are.

Mothers are often overwhelmed with responsibility, from taking care of their families to balancing careers with personal life and creative expression. Mothers wear so many hats to fulfill this plethora of duties that it can be challenging to maintain all of this responsibility. This is why mothers become our role-models - their strength and resilience is admirable.

The role of a mother is diverse and complex, and today is a day to celebrate everything that our wonderful mothers do. Modern motherhood looks radically different than it did years ago and as their roles expand, so the way they dress must too.

If we look at the ever-changing, diverse role of a mother through a fashion-focused lens, it is interesting to observe how the fashion industry caters for mothers in all different walks of life and tailors to each and every responsibility they undertake.

This varies from the way clothing is adapted to cater for mothers who require comfortable, flexible materials, to mothers who need something more functional and adaptable to their everyday needs. The fashion industry is only growing in scale and accessibility, celebrating women and their strength by creating clothes for every style and need without sacrificing trendiness or taste.

When balancing the many responsibilities of being a mother, especially those who are juggling family responsibilities with a tight to-do list, comfort is essential! The athleisure and loungewear market delivers clothing that is light, breathable, and soft without skimping on style. This offers moms pieces that allow them to comfortably navigate both their home-life and their busy schedules! Yoga pants, zip-up jackets, and sweat-sets are becoming increasingly popular and are encouraging comfort and casual street-style to overlap.

Furthermore, many brands use stretch fabric, adjustable waists, and seamless styles that prioritize flattering fits for every body shape! The fashion industry is becoming more and more body-positive and size-inclusive, ensuring everyone is celebrated and feels beautiful.

Additionally, athleisure brands deliver styles for new mothers and mothers-to-be, ensuring they are comfortable and confident. Fashion brands are embracing nursing-friendly tops and dresses to ensure comfort, efficiency, and privacy. Maternity wear is adapting in ways that mean mothers-to-be can wear whatever they feel the most confident in during a time of great change and excitement.

Functionality in fashion is another key element that allows mothers to tackle their daily life whilst still maintaining a sense of personal style.

The line between functionality and style is evolving and adapting to navigate the complexity of each individual's needs. Whether you prefer something timeless or trendy, the bag market

caters to every mother’s style and responsibilities. For example, with the ever increasing accumulation of baby-necessities, a bag that is large, easily organized, yet stylish, is essential for a new mom.

On the topic of function-forward fashion, the sportswear industry delivers an incredible range of lightweight, durable footwear that is ideal for moms who are on their feet all day. Whether this be drop-offs, commuting, or running between errands and social events, cool yet comfy sneakers, sliders, and flats are a game-changer. Sneakers are often found in vintage stores, inviting the opportunity to give something a new lease of life and reducing the need to buy something brand new!

Many mothers are constantly on-the-go, and the rise in businesses that produce sustainable garments made with recycled and ethical materials such as cotton, linen, and bamboo provides the womenswear market with clothing that is breathable and versatile.

Often moms find that they would rather focus on their families and responsibilities over spending time worrying about what to wear everyday. In this case, owning simple yet well-made basics allows for reliable outfit choices when balancing hectic schedules. High-quality staples might cost a little more, but will last a long time and have a much better impact on the environment than something cheaper and poorly-made.

For Moms who are on a budget and prioritize spending money on their kids rather than on luxury clothing, shopping second-hand either in thrift stores or online vintage shops can allow moms to afford fashionable, quality pieces for both everyday and special occasions. Very often, designer labels find their way into vintage stores and are sold for a fraction of the original price! Sites like eBay, Vinted, and Depop are great places for moms to shop without breaking the bank.

Additionally, social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and blogs have increased the number of ‘momfluencers’, opening up a community of moms who share their love of clothing and self-expression. These influencers keep on top of fashion trends, providing content that blends style, lifestyle, and parenting. Discovering personal style in motherhood has never been easier with all the content and inspiration to be found online.

Today more than ever, the fashion industry caters for every different role that our mothers fill and admires the strength it takes to maintain so many different roles every day.

More and more brands are straying from the outdated ‘mom-fashion’ and understand that mothers are not only caregivers but are businesswomen, artists, athletes, and they care about clothes! The fashion industry is understanding that the role of a mother is not one-size-fits-all.

Whether on the school run or at work, modern mums are dressing not just for the roles they fill — but for the powerful women they are.
